Week one is nearly done. The Reston season closes Saturday with a free Queen tribute, Loudoun United has moved Saturday's kickoff to 6:30, and one deadline runs out Friday.

The 5-second plan
Young kids: Rocknoceros on the One Loudoun plaza, Mon 8/24 at 11. Free, in Ashburn, and school being back thinned the crowd.
A couple: Last Ham Standing improv at Franklin Park, Sat 8/22 at 8. $10 to $14, and it's the latest thing on the list.
In your twenties: Next Stop Comedy at Lost Rhino, Fri 8/21. In Ashburn, done by nine.
A teenager: the Summer Carnival at the Cascades teen center, Fri 8/21. Free, but read the fine print below first.
Staying in Ashburn: School of Rock on a screen in District Park, Sun 8/23. Free, inflatable guitars included.
The one to plan around: Almost Queen closes the Reston season Saturday night. Free, no ticket, and the last one until next summer.

Editor's Pick

Almost Queen closes the Reston Concerts on the Town season Saturday night, and it costs nothing. It's the band's first time on this series and the last concert of the 2026 run, so the next free Saturday night like this one is nine months away. The set works through the ones everybody knows, Bohemian Rhapsody and We Will Rock You and Radio Ga Ga, and then goes further in for Flash, Spread Your Wings and Love of My Life. It's a Sip and Stroll night, which means a drink travels with you around the plaza instead of being penned into a beer garden. Bring a chair. The Pavilion lawn fills from about seven for a headline act.

Sat 8/22, 7:45–9:15 p.m. · Free, no ticket · ~20 min, the Pavilion, 1825 Discovery St, Reston · All ages
This Weekend

Two are Sunday, the headline is free, and the best-value dinner out is a discount you get by saying four words to a server.

Kickoff is 6:30, and some ticket listings still show 7: Loudoun United hosts New Mexico United at Segra Field. The club moved the time on Aug 14, so go by the club's own matchday timeline rather than the hour on a resale listing. It's Kids Fest night, and the Sheetz Kids Club is free to join for anyone 16 and under and comes with a ticket to this match.
Sat 8/22, gates 5:30, kickoff 6:30 · Prices on SeatGeek, not the club page; Sheetz Kids Club members get one free · ~15 min, Leesburg · All ages
Say the tournament name, save 20 percent: the Loudoun Premier Cup fills the county with soccer families, and its partner restaurants posted real offers. Silver Diner at One Loudoun takes 20 percent off the check, alcohol excluded, when you mention the Cup. You don't need a kid in the tournament.
Fri 8/21 to Sun 8/23 only · Discounts vary; codes on the tournament page · In Ashburn · All ages
A Friday that isn't the same barstool: Next Stop Comedy brings a stand-up lineup into the Lost Rhino taproom on Red Rum Drive. Advance tickets only and the refund window has closed, so buy only if you're going.
Fri 8/21, 7:30–9 p.m. · Ticketed; price shown at checkout · In Ashburn · No age policy posted
Two wineries, one ticket, and actual goats: Seasonal Sip and Snack pairs Breaux and 868 Estate, a bite and a glass at each, with Bluffing Goat Farm bringing the goats to Breaux. Start at either.
Sun 8/23, 1–5 p.m. · Ticketed; no price on the winery's page · ~30 min · 21+
A Saturday night that isn't a lawn: Last Ham Standing brings its improv show to Franklin Park Arts Center, audience suggestions turned into scenes and games. The latest start in this issue, and the cheapest seated night out in it.
Sat 8/22, 8–10 p.m. · $10 to $14 · ~35 min, Purcellville · All ages
The marquee Sunday, and you can pack your own dinner: Gipsy Kings featuring Nicolas Reyes close the weekend at the Filene Center. Wolf Trap still lets you carry in your own food and drink, alcohol included, so a lawn ticket and a cooler is the whole plan.
Sun 8/23, 8 p.m., gates 6:30 · Ticketed; on sale when we checked · ~35 min · All ages

One we pulled: Jon Batiste at Wolf Trap Saturday was going to lead this. Sold out, waitlist only.

Family

Three of these are Friday, and the one to plan around is Sunday night on a lawn in Ashburn.

The last easy Sunday before homework: Loudoun Station screens School of Rock in District Park and hands out blow-up instruments, so the air-guitar portion is officially sanctioned. Three hours free in the Metro garage, one more Sunday after this.
Sun 8/23, 6:30–9 p.m. · Free · In Ashburn · Elementary through teen, plus the parents who owned the soundtrack
Excavators, timed, with an audience: the Top Gun Construction Rodeo at Great Country Farms runs heavy-equipment operators head to head, qualifying Saturday and finals Sunday, with the machines parked where kids can get close.
Sat 8/22 and Sun 8/23, farm 9–5 · $12 child / $14 adult advance plus $1 per ticket, or $16 per guest age 2+ at the gate · ~40 min · All ages, built for the truck-obsessed
Read the fine print before you drop off: the After Hours Teen Center at Cascades Library turns Friday into a carnival, no parents in the room. Two things catch people out: teens must arrive between 6 and 6:30, and a parent has to verify their ID at the front desk first, any time before Friday.
Fri 8/21, 6–9 p.m. · Free · ~12 min · Grades 6–12, registration required
The concert that just became a preschool concert: Rocknoceros plays the One Loudoun plaza Monday morning. The elementary crowd that packed this all summer is in a classroom now, which makes it a much easier hour with a two-year-old.
Mon 8/24, 11 a.m.–noon · Free · In Ashburn · Toddlers and preschoolers with a grown-up
For the one who didn't start school Monday: Pre-K Skill Builders at Brambleton Library is an hour of literacy and kindergarten-readiness activities. A useful hour in the week the big kid leaves and the house goes quiet.
Fri 8/21, 10–11 a.m. · Free · In Ashburn · Ages 3–5 with a caregiver
What Actually Matters

Four clocks. The first runs out tomorrow, and showing up at the old building will cost you a morning.

Family Services moves tomorrow, one mile down the road: the Shenandoah Office Building at 102 Heritage Way is closing for a renovation. Child Protective Services, Adult Protective Services and foster care and adoption see their last appointments there today, then open Thursday at 1501 Edwards Ferry Road NE, Suite 301. SNAP, Medicaid, TANF, child care and energy assistance can use either building until Sept 11. Numbers, emails and hours don't change.
Moves Thu 8/20; both open through Fri 9/11 · Free · Leesburg; Route 54 and fare-free Transit on Demand serve it · Anyone with an appointment
Free, and the sign-up shuts Friday: the county's ACEs training is an hour on how rough events in childhood turn into adult health problems. Virtual, 18 and over, Spanish version on request.
Register by Fri 8/21; session Mon 8/24, 12–1:30 p.m. · Free · Online · Adults
Thirty slots, form closes Aug 31 at 5 p.m.: Battle of the Bands is broader than the name suggests: a solo singer, an instrumentalist, a DJ, or a band of up to eight all count. The competition date isn't posted, so apply and watch that page.
Closes Mon 8/31, 5 p.m. · Free to enter · Venue not posted · Middle and high school
No deadline, which is exactly why nobody uses it: the county is rewriting the rules for data centers and substations: height, noise, on-site power, and where a substation can go. Staff fold written comments into the report that goes to the Board in September, so a comment sent this month is one they read first. The hearing where you speak isn't until November.

Opening Radar

A permit is not a sign in the window. Here's what each county record says, and nothing past it.

bartaco has its permit and a date it hasn't confirmed: county health staff inspected 44695 Uptown Row Drive on Aug 5, wrote that it is approved to open and operate, and handed over the permit on the spot. The inspector's note adds that it plans to open September 16th, with no year written down. That's the restaurant's stated plan, not a confirmed date.
Inspection Aug 5; no confirmed opening date · No menu prices posted · In Ashburn · All ages
Tous Les Jours cleared its inspection at Ashbrook Marketplace: the bakery at 44170 Ashbrook Marketplace Plaza was inspected Aug 5 and is listed as Permitted. The inspector's entire comment is one word: Approved. We flagged the signs going up in June; this is the next step, not the last one.
Inspection Aug 5; no opening date on record · No menu prices posted · In Ashburn · All ages
Registration Radar

Fall windows are shutting and winter ones just opened. Two have a date before Tuesday.

The one with a hard number on it: Loudoun South Little League fall baseball is open for league age 5 to 15, but on-time pricing ended Aug 14, so it's $275 now. Aug 24 matters more: cancel by then and you get a partial refund less a fee; after Aug 25 the league says you may not be eligible for anything back. A waitlist spot is not a roster spot.
Refund cutoff Mon 8/24 · $275 per player, $25 off each additional child · ~20 min, South Riding · League age 5–15 inside LSLL boundaries
Sunday is the gate, not the sign-up: Ashburn Village Sports Pavilion runs both swim assessments Sunday and you can't enroll without one. Anyone new, or back after three months away, sits one however well they swim, and no further date is posted.
Sun 8/23, Frozen Jets 1–2 p.m., lessons 2–3 p.m. · Frozen Jets $88/mo plus a $60 season fee for members, $105 plus $80 non-members; lessons $63/mo members, $79.80 non-members · In Ashburn · Frozen Jets is youth swimmers; lessons 3 and up
Thirty spots, no tournaments, starts Tuesday: Dulles Youth Sports fall wrestling is eighteen practices at Freedom High School. Training only, no meets, which is the point if your kid is curious but not ready to give up Sundays from December on.
First practice Tue 8/25, runs to 10/22 · $270 for 18 practices, $25 drop-in · ~20 min, South Riding · All experience levels
A correction we owe you, and it costs money: last week we said the Dulles Youth Basketball fee only appeared once you started the form. It's on the registration page, as a ladder: $200 early, $225 since Aug 1, $250 from Sept 1. The league's own program page still shows a flat $200, so check the total at checkout.
Rises to $250 Tue 9/1 · $225 now · In Ashburn · Grades K–5

Two are cheaper if you buy ahead, and two take your money at the gate.

Bring the kids Sunday, not Saturday: the 52nd Virginia Scottish Games take over Great Meadow on Labor Day weekend with pipe bands, heavy athletics and a clan field. Kids 5 to 12 are free Sunday, $5 Saturday, under 5 free either day. Patron packages and most whisky tastings are gone.
Sat 9/5 and Sun 9/6 · $25 adult day, $40 both days · ~40 min · All ages
Ten dollars at the gate, always the third weekend: the Bluemont Fair fills a 200-year-old village at the foot of the Blue Ridge with juried crafts, live music, a free Children's Fair and a petting zoo. Parking free, no pets.
Sat 9/19 and Sun 9/20, 10–5 · $10 at the gate, free for 9 and under · ~30 min · All ages
The one to book now: Temple Hall Farm opens its pumpkin patch and cut-your-own flower fields the last Saturday of September. Every paid admission includes a pumpkin and sunflowers. Weekdays are $3 cheaper and there are no online tickets, so bring a card.
Sept 26 to Nov 1, daily 9–5 · $15 per person, free under 2 · ~20 min · All ages
